Five years at BitMEX
Senior Software Engineer, then Engineering Manager · 2021-2026
TypeScript · React Native · GraphQL · Kubernetes · Payments · Claude Code
I joined BitMEX in 2021 as a senior engineer and became an engineering manager in 2022, staying hands-on throughout: architecture, code, and production debugging alongside running teams.
Earn (2021). BitMEX’s savings product, its move beyond derivatives. I owned the architecture and personally built the GraphQL API and the Kubernetes deployment in a three-person team, shipping it as its own microservice and microfrontend rather than growing it inside the exchange codebase.
Mobile relaunch (2022-2024). The original app had been delisted, leaving the exchange with no mobile product, and the replacement effort had stalled. I moved onto the team in January 2022, shipped the replacement React Native app that June, and grew the function from one engineer to seven as the app passed 100,000 users. I also built the mobile security baseline: secrets management, app hardening, jailbreak detection, and push infrastructure.
Web, API and Payments (2025-2026). Replaced a redirect-based fiat on-ramp with a unified in-platform flow across four providers with live quotes, added fiat withdrawal capability that had never existed, and rebuilt the affiliate platform. On-ramp volume doubled in the first month after launch.
Flow to TypeScript (2026). A migration multiple people had attempted and failed over several years. I architected it and executed it solo in two months by orchestrating AI coding agents across roughly 200 pull requests, keeping Flow and TypeScript coexisting in production instead of attempting a cutover, and building the edge-case test coverage that made agent-driven changes verifiable. The reusable agent skills and test infrastructure outlived the migration.
BitMEX announced its closure in 2026. I stayed through the wind-down to help build the platform that lets customers withdraw their funds indefinitely after the exchange stops operating.
